Are you eligible to be Married in Chester-le-Street Parish Church?

From 1st October 2008 there are new rules governing who is able to be married in church by banns licence.

 A person has a Qualifying Connection with a parish and is therefore able to be married by banns licence if that person:

  • was baptised in the parish. (This does not apply where the baptism formed part of a combined service of baptism or confirmation);
  • had his or her confirmation entered in a church register book of a church or chapel in the parish;
  • has at any time had his or her usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 months;
  • has at any time habitually attended public worship in the parish for at least 6 months;

Or a Parent of that person has at any time during that person’s lifetime:

  • had his or her usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 months;
  • habitually attended public worship in the parish for at least 6 months;
  • a Parent or Grandparent of that person was married in the parish.

If you do not feel that you qualify for any of these conditions please get in contact and we can have a chat over what you can do to be married in church.

Have either of you been married before?

If so, you must contact the Rector, Revd David Tully (0191) 388 4027, before any arrangements can be made. It is also possible, in certain circumstances, for us to offer you a SERVICE OF BLESSING following a Civil Marriage at the Register Office.
